Josh talks about the theater company
The theater group is comprised of approximately 15 adults with a variety of developmental disabilities. Attributes of the group consist of a common experience of being a member of a marginal group in society. A wish for society to accept us as we are and a passion to bring awareness of our existence and a hope of being joined by others in our quest for a better life. Explicit rules include that no-one is treated as they are by the larger society. That means no-one is judged regarding their behaviors, no matter how idiosyncratic they may be. There is a total acceptance of each individual. Everyone is a full member regardless of social, emotional or cognitive difficulties. The emotional needs of the group take precedence over any theatrical considerations. Everyone can take part in the company's productions any way that they want or decide not to take part at all. Members are supportive and caring toward each other.
